What is Priligy (Dapoxetine) used for​​​?

Priligy contains the active ingredient Dapoxetine. Dapoxetine is used to treat premature ejaculation. It increases the time to ejaculate, and thus reduces the stress you face over how fast you ejaculate and may improve your satisfaction during sexual intercourse. 

Dosage and how to use​ Priligy (Dapoxetine)

  • Take this medication one to three hours before sexual activity, only when you need it.
  • This medication can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of Priligy (Dapoxetine)?​

Priligy (Dapoxetine) is rapidly absorbed and has a short half-life which minimizes the adverse effects that are common to the SSRI’s.

  • Dizziness or feeling of light-headedness - Make sure you are not dehydrated (especially if you have not had anything to drink in the past 4-6 hours), sweating for a long period or have an illness involving fever, diarrhoea or vomiting. Take the medication with a full glass of water. Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position. This may affect your ability to drive and use machinery. Do not drive or do things that need you to be alert.
  • Headache 
  • Nausea 

What precautions should I take when taking Priligy (Dapoxetine)?

Inform your healthcare professional if: 

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You are taking medications called Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors such as Sildenafil, Tadalafil or Vardenafil
  • You have heart, kidney or liver problems 
  • You have a history of dizziness from low blood pressure or have had fainting episodes before
  • You have or ever had:
    - Glaucoma, a condition where the eye pressure is increased
    - Mood conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, thoughts of suicide or harming yourself
    - Bleeding tendencies 
    - Epilepsy (fits)

What other medications and foods should I avoid when taking Priligy (Dapoxetine)?

Avoid drinking alcohol as it may increase the risk of fainting. 

Dapoxetine may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking or intend to take any other medication, supplements, traditional medications or herbal remedies. 

This includes certain medicines such as: 

  • Medicines used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. 
  • Anti-fungal medicines (e.g. ketoconazole)
  • Medicines used for mood conditions
  • St John’s Wort 

Handling and storage of Priligy (Dapoxetine)

  • Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children. 
  • Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.
