What is Spedra® used for?

Spedra® contains the active ingredient Avanafil. Avanafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition where you are unable to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in your penis, allowing blood to flow into your penis when you get sexually excited. This medicine will only help you to get an erection if you are sexually stimulated. Therefore it is taken on an as-needed basis.

Dosage and how to use​

• You should take Spedra® approximately 15 to 30 minutes before you have sexual intercourse. Remember that Spedra® will only help you to get an erection if you are sexually stimulated.
• Spedra® can be taken with or without food; if taken with food, it may take longer to work.
• You should not take Spedra® more than once a day.

How effective is Spedra® for Erectile Dysfunction?

Avanafil has been studied to show significant improvement in the average International Index of Erectile Dysfunction - erectile function domain scores and in successful sexual intercourse attempts.

Spedra® comes in 3 strengths - 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg, with the highest dosage of 200mg being the most effective without additional risk of side effects. It is known to be a highly effective medication for ED treatment that is well-tolerated by men of all ages.

What are the possible side effects of Avanafil?​

• Headache
• Flushing
• Nasal congestion
• Back pain
• Very rarely, priapism (an erection that will not go away) - If you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, get medical help right away. If it is not treated right away, priapism can permanently damage your penis.

What precautions should I take?

Inform your healthcare professional if:

• If you have any disease, injury or deformity of your penis.
• If you have an irregular heartbeat, a heart condition, or blood vessel disease.
• If you have had an eye condition causing loss of vision.
• If you have high or low blood pressure, or angina.
• If you have any problems with the way your liver works or with the way your kidneys work.
• If you have had a stroke or a heart attack.
• If you have a condition which causes bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer.
• If you have sickle cell disease.
• If you have ever had bone marrow cancer or leukaemia.
• If you are taking or using any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines, and recreational drugs.
• If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.

What other medications and foods should I avoid when taking Spedra®?

Avoid taking grapefruit, or grapefruit juice as they may interact with your medication and increase the risk of side-effects.

Drinking alcohol can temporarily weaken your ability to get an erection and may increase the blood pressure lowering effects of the medication, which can be dangerous. To get the maximum benefit from your medication, it is advisable not to drink excessive amounts of alcohol before taking this medication. 

Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking or intend to take any other medication, supplements, traditional medications or herbal remedies.

This includes certain medications such as:

• Antibiotics
• Anti-fungal medications
• Medications used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection

Handling and storage

• Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children. 
• Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.
